What Is Carbon Tint

Carbon Film. No Metal.
No Drama. No Fading.

Carbon tint sits in the sweet spot between cheap dyed film and premium ceramic. It outperforms dyed on every metric and costs less than ceramic. For most drivers in Lebanon County, it is the right call.

Carbon window film gets its name from the carbon particles embedded in the layers of the film. These particles block visible light and absorb infrared heat without using any metal. No metal means no purple haze as the film ages, no signal interference, and no mirror-like reflectivity that Pennsylvania law does not allow anyway.

What carbon film does really well is staying black and matte over time. Dyed film looks great in the showroom and starts shifting purple in about two years. Carbon film looks the same in year six as it did on install day.

It also blocks 40 to 50% of infrared heat. Not as much as premium ceramic, but enough to make a real difference in a Pennsylvania summer. Your car will be noticeably cooler than with no tint or with cheap dyed film.

And yes, it blocks 99% of UV rays. Dashboard protection, skin protection, upholstery protection. All covered. If you want maximum heat rejection, ceramic does more. But for most daily drivers, carbon is exactly where the value sits.

Carbon film technology is recognized by the International Window Film Association (IWFA) as a non-metallic, signal-safe film category that meets all US automotive standards.

Why Carbon Film

Six Things Carbon Tint
Does Right

Stays Black Forever

Dyed film turns purple. Carbon film does not. The matte charcoal finish looks the same in year five as it did on install day. That is not marketing. That is how carbon particles work under UV exposure.

40 to 50% Heat Rejected

Carbon film absorbs infrared heat instead of letting it through. Your car will be noticeably cooler. Not as aggressive as ceramic, but enough to make a real difference in a Lebanon County summer.

99% UV Protection

UV is what fades your dashboard, cracks your leather, and adds up on your skin during long drives on Route 422. Carbon film blocks 99% of it. Same UV protection as ceramic, at a lower price.

Zero Signal Interference

No metal in carbon film. Your GPS works. E-ZPass works. Phone signal works. Backup camera works. Carbon film is completely radio-transparent, which is exactly what Pennsylvania drivers need.

PA Inspection Safe

Every carbon film install at Garage 717 is done to Pennsylvania VLT requirements. 70% on front side windows, any shade legal on rear glass. You will not have a problem at your next inspection.

Lifetime Warranty

All carbon film installs at Garage 717 come with a lifetime manufacturer warranty against bubbling, peeling, and color change. If it fails, bring it back. That is the deal every time.

Who Carbon Tint Is For

Not Every Driver Needs
Premium Ceramic.

Carbon film is the right choice for most people. Here is who gets the most out of it.

01
Daily Commuters

You drive every day in Lebanon County. You want protection, privacy, and a clean look without spending premium ceramic prices. Carbon delivers all three with a lifetime warranty.

SUV and Truck Owners

More glass means more heat. Carbon film on a large SUV or truck makes a significant difference in cabin temperature without the higher cost of ceramic on every panel.

03
Privacy First Drivers

If your main goal is a darker, more private look on rear glass and you want it to stay that way without fading, carbon is exactly the film you need. No purple, no peeling, just a consistent matte finish.

04
Budget Conscious Buyers

Carbon film costs less than ceramic but outperforms every dyed or metallic film on the market. If you want real performance without paying the top price, this is where the value lives.

05
New Car Owners

Just picked up a new car and want to protect the interior from day one without a big investment? Carbon film is how most people do it. UV protection and heat rejection from the first drive.

06
Existing Tint Replacement

Your old dyed tint is bubbling or going purple. Carbon film is the direct upgrade. It looks better immediately and stays that way indefinitely. No surprises three years from now.

FAQ

Questions About
Carbon Window Tint

Yes, in every measurable way. Dyed film absorbs light but does almost nothing for heat. It also starts fading and turning purple after two to three years. Carbon film uses carbon particles instead of dye, which means it does not fade, rejects 40 to 50% of infrared heat, and looks the same years from now as it does on day one. The lifetime warranty on carbon versus one to three years on dyed film tells you everything you need to know.
Yes. Carbon film is fully legal in Pennsylvania when installed at the right VLT level. PA law requires front side windows to allow at least 70% light transmission. Rear glass has no restriction. Garage 717 installs all carbon film to PA legal specs on every vehicle. You can also read our full PA tint law guide for the complete breakdown.
Correct. The purple fading people associate with old tint jobs is caused by the organic dye in dyed films breaking down under UV exposure. Carbon film does not use organic dye. It uses carbon particles, which do not react the same way to UV. The film stays matte and dark indefinitely. That is why it comes with a lifetime warranty against color change, while dyed film warranties typically run one to three years.
Both are excellent non-fading films. Ceramic blocks more heat, up to 60% infrared rejection versus 40 to 50% for carbon. Ceramic also comes in lighter shades that still block significant heat, which matters if you want heat protection without a darker appearance. Carbon is less expensive and still performs well on both UV protection and heat. Read more about ceramic film here if you are comparing the two.
Most sedans and coupes are done in 2 to 4 hours. SUVs and trucks with more glass panels take 4 to 6 hours. Same-day service is available most days at Garage 717. Drop off in the morning and pick up the same afternoon. Call (717) 454-6712 or use the quote form below to book your slot.
All carbon film installs at Garage 717 come with a lifetime manufacturer warranty against bubbling, peeling, and color change. The warranty is on the film itself, not just the labor. If the film fails for any covered reason, bring the car back and we will sort it out. Check our services page for the full details on what each install includes.
